Chapter 23
Staring in a mirror, Teverild lifted a hand and swept it over several of the new braids in his hair. The previous night Cassius had quickly learned how to plait it, and the beads Madeline had designed were incredible. At Evlitharâs suggestion, theyâd added Valzadari ones in cobalt between the metal ones, and the overall effect made Teverild happy.
Vylendri had not only trimmed him up but had scheduled his next appointment in eight weeks to keep it from getting too straggly. Told to never touch it again with scissors, Teverild refused to gainsay her, so he rolled with it.
Because it was the day of his mating ceremony, Teverild had jazzed up his normal boring style. Instead of a giant thick mass, heâd thrown a few medium sized twists in between his chartreuse and black streaks, then split it into two sections which were braided on top of each other. It gave him something to do and helped calm the tiny nerves in his belly. Although heâd expected to be sweating and wondering what heâd been thinking to agree to the ceremony, all he had was minor anxiety, and it related to things ensuing without a hitch.
As afraid as heâd once been of connecting to anyone, losing Cassius would be a far greater loss than his innate desire to stay single. His sentinel would never let him down, and his personality matched up with Teverildâs. Whenever they were together, he enjoyed himself and he was looking forward to an eternity with him. In his reflection was a man with pointy ears who had no regret about his choices.
Turning away, Teverild slipped on the charcoal cloak decorated with gorgeous scrollwork in cobalt and bright green. It was beautiful enough that not having another reason to wear it saddened him. His unique lack of race had allowed him to bypass the Council rule that required elves to don them at Council events, and despite being added to the Sentinel Brotherhood, he still couldnât bring himself to resemble elves by donning one with regularity, nor did he want his sharp cobalt sentinel-inspired suits covered.
Cassius had no argument about his lack of cloak. To date, each time Teverild asked questions about Cassiusâs dream jaunt to the land of the Fae, he spent ten minutes bitching about being unable to lose the thing unless he was in his assigned bedroom.
With his dark tunic and pants, Teverild had paired his new sentinel boots, and they easily ate up the distance between his room and the backyard where the ceremony was being held. His grin formed when he spotted Cassius already standing in front of the High Kings, ready to promise his soul to Teverild. Eager to get on with it, Teverild jogged down the aisle between the rows of seats and admired the gorgeous decorations. They matched his outfit, and there were skulls on everything.
âHi, baby,â he said to Cassius, once he reached his side.
Cassius kissed him. âAre you ready?â
âAbsolutely, letâs do this.â
âThatâs usually my question,â Aleksander complained while Rafe gave his mate an exaggerated eye-roll.
